When Faith Is Questioned · Question 11

What Does the Bible Say About Sexuality and Identity?

“Why would God care about my sexuality or gender identity? Isn’t this part of who I am?”

Why This Question Matters

Questions about attraction, sexual orientation, gender identity, and belonging can touch your deepest sense of self. These experiences are distinct, and your story deserves careful listening. Every person bears God’s image and deserves dignity and compassion. Biblical teaching never gives permission for ridicule, rejection, or contempt.

A Simple Answer

The Bible presents our bodies and sexuality as gifts from God, with meaning and purpose. Historic Christian teaching understands marriage as the covenant union of a man and a woman, sexual intimacy as belonging within that union, and our creation as male and female as part of God’s good design. Attraction, feelings about gender, and sexual behavior are not the same thing; experiencing a struggle is not identical to choosing an action. Jesus calls every disciple to bring body, desires, and identity under His loving authority. For those who trust Him, the deepest truth about who they are is that they belong to Christ.

The Truth To Remember

Jesus does not ask only some people to surrender their sexuality; He calls every disciple to trust Him with the whole of life.

Rooted In Scripture

Genesis 1:27; 2:24 — People bear God’s image; creation as male and female and the marriage union are rooted in God’s design.

Matthew 19:4–6 — Jesus appeals to creation when teaching about marriage.

1 Corinthians 6:18–20 — Belonging to Christ shapes how believers honor God with their bodies.

Galatians 3:26–29 — Through faith, believers are God’s children and share equal belonging in Christ.

Going A Little Deeper

The Bible does not use today’s identity labels, so applying its teaching requires care. The historic Christian understanding treats our sexed bodies as meaningful rather than incidental to who we are. That is a theological understanding of creation; it does not answer every question about a person’s experience. Neither discomfort with gender stereotypes nor an attraction tells the whole story of a person’s identity.

Following Christ can be costly, including in sexuality, marriage, or singleness. The church should offer faithful friendship and genuine belonging, not leave people to carry difficult questions alone. It must also repent of selective judgment, shame, abuse, and other failures of love. Grace welcomes us to Christ, who calls all of us toward holiness. We should not promise that every unwanted feeling will disappear.

Consider This

1. Is your concern mainly about attraction, identity, biblical teaching, or how you have been treated?

2. What gives your body and identity their meaning—and could your Creator help you understand both?

3. What would trustworthy Christian friendship look like as you explore what it means to belong to Christ?
