Listen Before You Speak

“Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” —James 1:19 ESV

RECEIVE

Jesus listened with attention and compassion. He saw the person before Him, understood the heart beneath the words, and responded with wisdom, truth, and grace. Because He first loved us, we can slow down and offer that same attentive love to others.

REFLECT

Listening is more than waiting for our turn to speak. It is a posture of humility that seeks to understand before being understood. Hurry, assumption, and defensiveness can make us answer a question that was never asked or overlook the pain behind someone’s words. Listening makes room for the dignity of the person God has placed before us.

RESPOND

In one conversation today, set aside the urge to prepare your answer. Ask a thoughtful question, listen without interrupting, and reflect back what you heard before you respond.

PRAYER

Jesus, slow me down when I become hurried or defensive. Help me listen with humility, patience, and love. Give me eyes to see the person behind the words and wisdom to respond in a way that reflects Your heart. Amen.

Receive Christ. Reflect Christ.
