Why Would Jesus Be the Only Way to God?
“Isn’t it narrow or arrogant to say that Jesus is the only way to God?”
Why This Question Matters
In a pluralistic world, exclusive truth claims can feel disrespectful. The concern may come from genuine love for people of other faiths. Christianity should never use Jesus’s uniqueness as permission for contempt or coercion.
A Simple Answer
Christianity does make an exclusive claim: reconciliation with God comes through Jesus. But the invitation is radically inclusive—Christ is offered to people of every nation, background, and social position. Christians do not claim they are better than others; they claim they need the same grace they invite everyone else to receive.
The Truth To Remember
The Christian claim is not “Christians are better”; it is “Jesus is the Savior we all need.”
Rooted In Scripture
John 14:6 — Jesus identifies Himself as the way to the Father.
Acts 4:12 — The apostles proclaim salvation in Jesus’s name.
1 Timothy 2:5–6 — Jesus is presented as the one mediator between God and humanity.
Revelation 7:9–10 — God’s redeemed people are pictured as coming from every nation and people.
Going A Little Deeper
Every worldview makes some claims that exclude alternatives, even the claim that all religions are equally valid. The question is not whether a belief is exclusive but whether it is true. Christianity grounds Jesus’s uniqueness in who He is and what He has done: God comes toward humanity, bears sin, conquers death, and offers reconciliation as grace. This should produce humility rather than superiority. Christians can respect another person’s freedom and sincerely appreciate truth or goodness they see in another tradition while still believing contradictory claims about God cannot all be true in the same sense.
Consider This
1. Do you find all exclusive truth claims troubling, or especially religious ones? Why?
2. Can two religions make genuinely contradictory claims about God and both be true in the same sense?
3. If Jesus really is who He claimed to be and rose from the dead, would His claim to be the way to God deserve a different kind of consideration?
A Simple Invitation
Rather than beginning with all religions at once, begin with Jesus. If His identity and resurrection are credible, His words about God deserve serious weight.
