Did Jesus Really Rise From the Dead?
“People do not come back from the dead. Why should I believe Jesus did?”
Why This Question Matters
This is the central historical claim of Christianity. The New Testament itself says that if Christ has not been raised, Christian faith collapses. So skepticism here is not a side issue—it goes to the heart of the faith.
A Simple Answer
Christians do not believe resurrection is normal; that is precisely why Jesus’s resurrection is claimed as an act of God. The earliest Christian message centered on Jesus’s death, burial, empty tomb, and appearances to followers who became convinced He was alive. The question is whether the historical evidence is better explained by resurrection or by an alternative explanation.
The Truth To Remember
Christianity stands or falls on the claim that Jesus truly rose from the dead.
Rooted In Scripture
1 Corinthians 15:3–8, 14 — Paul summarizes resurrection testimony and says faith is futile if Christ was not raised.
Luke 24:36–43 — The risen Jesus is presented as bodily alive, not merely remembered spiritually.
John 20:24–29 — Thomas moves from doubt to belief after encountering the risen Jesus.
Acts 2:22–36 — The earliest public preaching in Acts centers on God raising Jesus from death.
Going A Little Deeper
Historical arguments for the resurrection usually consider several pieces together: Jesus’s crucifixion and death, the early proclamation that He had risen, reported appearances to individuals and groups, and the transformation of frightened followers into public witnesses. Scholars disagree about how to explain these facts, and history cannot reproduce a miracle in a laboratory. Christianity asks whether, if God exists, resurrection is a plausible explanation of the evidence. It is reasonable to examine alternative explanations rather than assuming either miracle or impossibility at the outset.
Consider This
1. Do you reject the resurrection because you think the historical evidence is weak, or because you believe miracles are impossible before looking at the evidence?
2. What explanation do you think best accounts for the early disciples’ conviction that Jesus was alive?
3. If Jesus truly rose from the dead, what would that mean for His claims about Himself and for your life?
A Simple Invitation
The resurrection deserves more than a quick yes or no. Read 1 Corinthians 15 and one Gospel resurrection account and ask what explanation you find most convincing.
